The revolution’s controller. The most innovative idea so far to emerge from Nintendo about the Revolution. But what does it really mean? What will it add to gaming as a whole?

I’m sure most of you have already seen pictures and read about the “free-hand” controller but just in case I’ll skim over what it is. Basically the main part of the controller is in the shape of an average TV remote and has a D-Pad, three menu specific buttons and a Z-button style trigger underneath. The really exciting part is the controller contains sensors that are linked to sensors placed above and below the TV which transforms the controller into a pointer that can detect every movement made by your hand, from backwards, forwards and sideways to twists and turns. Basically, any movement your hand, wrist or arms make can be translated into Revolution games.

Gaming has slowly been growing more and more stale and predictable in the last five or six years and the fact that Nintendo is still trying to push the boundaries is great news for everyone – fan or not. A new Nintendo console with updated graphics and a new Mario game would’ve been fun but Nintendo couldn’t let the same trend continue forever. The new controller will bring new game ideas to the table as well as sprucing up the old ones. It should allow for more control over characters in-game and an overall more involving experience.

There will be add-ons for the controller. The only two announced so far are the “Numchuck” style add-on which purpose is mainly for fighting and shooting games, and the shell which convert the controller into the average controller we are already used to.

So in conclusion, I can't wait to get my hands on the "hands-free". Whether it will actually become "revolutionary" or just used as a wand in the next Harry Potter game is up to the developers, lets hope they can pull it off.

The controller raised my eyebrow a bit. I really hope it will turn out to be a good thing, but there's also a chance this can flop like people who try to redesign the QWERTY keyboard. People just like what they are used to, sometimes.

Ahh, that would make it quite a bit easier - if people wanted something different they could have it.

Cant wait to see how nintendo make FPS games alot more appealing with the "nun-chuck" look. Im thinking about that concept people have seen a while back that involved the joystick being mounted below the controler to form a whole new gun shaped controller.
